The Cabin – October 2024

Length of stay: 1 day
Visited: October 2024

We’ve had an unseasonably warm and dry fall in southern Ontario. So to make the most of the nice weather and beautiful display of fall colours we decided to head to the cabin. This would be our first visit to the cabin all year and baby M’s first visit ever.

We drove up Friday evening and arrived at the cabin at 8pm, or rather the road leading into the cabin. There’s a section of the road that is looking pretty rough these days and we typically just walk in with all our food, water, sleeping bags and pillows. But now we had the baby with us and all her things. Our goal was to take mostly everything in one trip and we figured we could always circle back tomorrow morning for anything non essential that we didn’t need to get us through the night. I had the baby in her carrier and K took the cooler and backpack with all our stuff. I’m not sure who was carrying more weight. From where we parked it’s about a 15 minute walk.

It was a little chilly outside (5°C), but felt slightly warmer inside the cabin (10°C). So we got a fire going in the wood stove. We then unpacked and got the baby ready for bed. Since we were only staying for one night we planned to just put the baby in the bed with us rather than lug her travel crib in. So when the baby went to bed, we went to bed. Except baby M was super happy to be out of her car seat and was very eager to start exploring her new surroundings. Then try throwing a new sleeping arrangement into the mix. Needless to stay, no one got much sleep.

But we woke up the next morning to blue skies and sunshine. The lake was nice and calm and there was a light layer of mist on the water. It was just above freezing, but it was expected to reach a high of 19°C later in the day.

After eating a late breakfast we set off on a hike. The fall foliage hasn’t been as vibrant where we live this year, but the forest was putting on a pretty good show up around the cabin. Many of the leaves had already fallen, but there were still quite a few on the trees.

We walked along the road towards a nearby lake. There were a few trees that had fallen over which spiced up the hike. To get closer to the lake we followed someone’s driveway and stumbled upon an abandoned cottage. It looked like it hadn’t been used in years. I guess that might explain why the road was in rough shape.

We backtracked to where the road was maintained again for an easier go of things. Nature was all around us. We saw lots of interesting things along the road: mushrooms, moss, many tall trees and lots of leaves.

But we also saw signs that humans were nearby.

The baby had fallen asleep at some point while we were walking and was still napping by the time we looped back to the road leading into the cabin. So we decided to extend our walk by exploring some of the old mining buildings nearby. Some of the ruins are now inaccessible due to too many fallen trees and overgrown vegetation. We visit this site often and it’s neat to see nature reclaiming its space.

By the time we looped back to the cabin it was time for some lunch. We lounged around for a bit to enjoy the beautiful day before cleaning and packing up.

It would have been nice to stay for another day. Next time.

Thanks for your kind words. You’re right, we spent a lot of time at the cabin during the pandemic. We haven’t visited as often since we moved out of the city, but I’m glad we managed to sneak in a couple visits in the fall with baby M, even if it was only for a night. Maybe this summer we can stay for a bit longer.

Looks like a super fun weekend! I miss fall weather and that sun, warmth and lack of snow! Especially on this snowy evening! 😆

It’s wonderful that M has this cabin to grow up in and grow into and so fun to hear about her curiosity to explore her surroundings. What a lovely childhood.

    And wonderful family photo! 💕

Oh I know! And we had such a lovely fall last year. I’m so glad we were able to take baby M to the cabin. We were a bit worried that she’d get into everything and we’d have a hard time keeping her away from the wood stove. But she did much better than expected. We have to work out a better sleeping arrangement though!

I wasn’t expecting all this snow yesterday! I had to go out and shovel twice. It looks beautiful though.

Aside from not getting much sleep, that sounds like just a lovely and relaxing way to spend a day. You all have such gorgeous smiles!

Ahhhh, babies have their own schedule, once they get of of a car seat or carrier or any type of containment. They do love to explore. Looks like you had a glorious weekend and made many happy memories Linda. Such a happy family selfie. Have as great weekend. Allan

They certainly do and our lives revolve around their schedule now. It’s always entertaining to watch her explore and find enjoyment with the most random things. I’m glad we were able to take her to the cabin even if we only stayed for one night. Thanks for reading. Linda

This looks and sounds so much fun! I just love how beautiful and serene everything appears to be. And the autumn foliage, oh so pretty! It’s funny how baby M was so eager to explore the surroundings. She’s very adventurous at heart.

Beautiful autumn tints Linda and how nice that it was your little girl’s first visit to the cabin. She must have been super excited to sleep between you both rather than in her cot. The mushrooms, leaves and moss all look so attractive on your photos.

Thanks!! The fall is my favourite season to visit the cabin. The days are still warm, the nights are cool and there are no annoying bugs. And the forest looks so beautiful when all the leaves are changing colour.

Thanks for your kind words. The cabin doesn’t have electricity or running water, which isn’t ideal when visiting with our baby, but it’s kind of nice being able to unplug from the world around us. We don’t do that as often as we should. And yes, I imagine she’ll enjoy her time at the cabin even more so the older she gets.

It looks like the perfect break in the best season for the cabin. For baby M it will seem so natural to come to the cabin having started so early.

    • WanderingCanadians says:

Oh absolutely! We were a bit anxious to take her to the cabin since we have to walk in with all our stuff and there’s no electricity or running water. But it wasn’t too bad. Next time we’d like to stay for longer though since it’s always so much work to bring everything in and then get settled in.

I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the cabin again with you. It’s wonderful that baby M had her first experience there, your description of the fall foliage and serene lake scenes had me pining for autumn again. Your photos too beautifully captured the essence of the season and the tranquility of the area.

    • WanderingCanadians says:

Thanks for your lovely comment. We were a bit concerned that she’d just get into everything and we’d have a hard time keeping her away from the wood stove. But she did really well, except when it came to sleeping. You win some, you lose some. But it was all worth it to enjoy the fall foliage at the cabin. I’m looking forward to the fall as well. It’s my favourite time of the year. It’ll be here before we know it.

The pictures are wonderful, but the family picture is truly beautiful. You all have such amazing smiles. What a lovely time spent at the cabin with baby M’s first visit.
I pray that the Lord continues to Bless your beautiful family with more joyful moments like these.

I wondered when you would take your little one to the cabin for the first time … and autumn seems to have been the perfect time! The leaves are such a vibrant colour (especially with the sun illuminating them so nicely) and it’s amazing to always come across so much beauty in a forest. Beautiful photo of the three of you – it certainly looks like baby M enjoyed the outing!

    • WanderingCanadians says:

The fall is my favourite time of the year to visit the cabin. It’s always a real treat to see the fall colours. The visit went much better than expected, but we need to figure out a better sleeping arrangement. And yes, I think baby M had a blast! We ended up returning later in November.

  11. Linda K says:

What a beautiful peaceful looking location. Just love the colours of the leaves! I believe you’ve made up for your lack of winter recently! brrrrrr
