Ontario | The Cabin

In some ways it feels like we’re right back where we were a year ago with this pandemic. While Ontario wasn’t back in full lockdown, new restrictions were put in place just before Christmas, including reducing capacity limits for indoor gatherings. Similar to last year, we decided to ring in the New Year at the cabin to get a change of scenery and momentarily escape from the world around us.
Ontario | Pinery Provincial Park
January 2022 – 2 days
Pinery Provincial Park is located along the sandy shores of Lake Huron. It is open year-round and is reputed to be one of the best places in Ontario to watch the sunset. It also protects the largest remaining tract of Oak Savanna and one of the longest freshwater coastal dune ecosystems in Ontario. In the winter, Pinery offers 38 km of cross-country skiing, two trails for snowshoeing, an outdoor skating rink and a hill for tobogganing.
Ontario | Arrowhead Provincial Park
February 2022 – 2 days
Arrowhead Provincial Park is located in the heart of cottage country near Huntsville. It is an extremely popular destination in the winter and offers a variety of outdoor activities and attractions including an ice skating trail, 6km of snowshoe trails and 28km of classic cross-country ski trails. It also holds Fire and Ice nights every Friday and Saturday night where the skating trail is lit with hundreds of tiki torches for an evening skate.
Ontario | Algonquin Provincial Park
February 2022 – 2 days
Algonquin Provincial Park is the oldest provincial park in Ontario and is open year-round. In the winter the Highway 60 corridor, which travels 56 kilometres across the southwestern corner of the park, is regularly plowed. Along this stretch there are plenty of opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating and even winter camping.
Ontario | Point Pelee National Park
March 2022 – 2 days
Point Pelee National Park is located on a peninsula that extends into Lake Erie and is the southernmost point of the mainland in Canada. It is the second smallest national park and the first national park to be established for conservation. It is situated in the Carolinian zone and while much of the park’s interior consists of marshes and swamp forest, it also features a beautiful sandy beach.
Ontario | Bruce Peninsula National Park
March 2022 – 2 days
Bruce Peninsula National Park is situated on part of the Niagara Escarpment along the rocky shores of Georgian Bay. It is known for its crystal clear water, rocky beaches and dramatic cliffs. The park offers plenty of outdoor activities, including camping and hiking to enjoy the rugged beauty of the area.
British Columbia
April 2022 – 10 days
British Columbia is the westernmost province in Canada. It is characterized by its stunning scenery. There’s the ocean, snow-capped mountains, islands, rainforests, and tall towering trees. It really is the perfect place for enjoying the great outdoors, assuming you can tolerate some rain. It isn’t referred to as the wet coast for nothing.

The Spring is always an exciting time of the year as new growth starts to appear and the days get longer. We’ve had to wait a bit longer than usual this year for our flowers to bloom and trees to bud. But once that happens, it’s only a matter of time until the bugs come out with a vengeance. So, with nice weather on the forecast for the weekend, we decided to visit the cabin before the bugs take over for the next few months.
Canadian Rockies
June/July 2022 – 10 days
The Canadian Rocky Mountains contain some of the most magnificent mountains in the country. With five national parks spread across southwestern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia, there are countless scenic drives; adventurous hiking trails; colourful lakes and rivers; and fabulous views of the wilderness and wildlife.
National Parks: Jasper, Banff, Yoho, Glacier, Mount Revelstoke, Kootenay and Elk Island

Italy
August 2022 – 10 days
Italy is a country that is shaped like a boot that is located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Perhaps this is why us Canadians were drawn to come here because that is how we pronounce “about”. But (not boot), Italy is also known for its wine regions, delicious cuisine, dramatic coastlines and being home to some of the most impressive ancient ruins on the planet. It’s the perfect place to get out and a boot, or rather, about.

Spain
August 2022 – 6 days
Spain is known for its beautiful beaches, awe-inspiring architecture, stunning scenery and culinary culture. It is also renowned for its vibrant festivals and sunny climate. No wonder the term siesta, which refers to taking an afternoon nap, is commonly associated with Spain, because you’ll need a break from trying to soak it all in (and because of the heat and from eating all those tasty tapas of course).

The Maritimes
September 2022 – 10 days
The east coast of Canada is known for its high tides, rugged coastlines, hidden coves, colourful fishing villages, fresh seafood and picturesque lighthouses. We spent a lot of time out west earlier this year, so we figured we might as well balance it out and explore the east coast. And so we planned a ten day road trip to visit New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

We’ve been battling a wicked cold over the past two weeks and were finally on the road to recovery. So we decided to head up to the cabin for the weekend to get a change of scenery and some fresh air. I’m a strong believer that spending time in nature can be healing and is good for your well-being.
Ontario | Algonquin Provincial Park
November 2022 – 3 days
Algonquin Provincial Park is the first provincial park that was created in Ontario and it’s also one of the largest parks in the province. It features a series of interconnected lakes, rivers and creeks that create one of the best places in Ontario to explore the backcountry by canoe. The Highway 60 Corridor cuts through the southern portion of Algonquin and contains a number of campgrounds, access points to the backcountry, and trails for hiking and cross-country skiing.
Ontario | Killarney Provincial Park
November 2022 – 2 days
Killarney Provincial Park is located along the northern shore of Georgian Bay. It is surrounded by wilderness and contains mountains, forests, lakes, beaches and wetlands. It is open year-round and provides a number of recreational activities depending on the season to enjoy the stunning scenery. The campground also offers roofed accommodations that provide a more comfortable and convenient camping experience.
Ontario | MacGregor Point Provincial Park
December 2022 – 2 days
MacGregor Point Provincial Park is located on the stunningly sandy shores of Lake Huron. The park is open year round, but boasts of having the biggest waves during the off-season in the fall and winter. The park offers several trails for hiking and other activities depending on the season, like fishing and swimming in the summer and cross-country skiing and skating in the winter.

Point Pelee National Park is located on a peninsula in Lake Erie and is the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland. It is the second smallest national park in Canada and is the first national park established for ecological conservation reasons. It contains marshes, wetlands, swamp forests and sandy beaches. It is also an important resting point for migrating birds and monarch butterflies in the spring and fall.
