The Alaska Highway was constructed in 1942 to connect the contiguous United States with Alaska to provide defence support during World War II. It was initially 2,700km in length, but has been improved and paved over the years and currently stretches 2,232km. It starts in Dawson Creek, British Columbia and ends in Delta Junction, Alaska. It is considered one of the most scenic drives in North America and provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy the wilderness and wildlife.

Visited: September 2023 – 2 days

Dawson City is located along the Yukon River. It is famous for being the centre of the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1890s. It was also once the capital of the Yukon before being moved to Whitehorse in 1953 following the completion of the Alaska Highway. Dawson City contains many historic buildings and a few museums to give a sense of what life was like during the largest gold rush in Canadian history.

Kluane National Park and Reserve is located within the Saint Elias Mountains in southwestern Yukon. It is home to the largest non-polar icefields in the world, contains some of the tallest mountains in Canada and features an abundance of wildlife. It offers a variety of hiking trails, a few different options for camping and other opportunities to explore the park’s rugged interior.

Visited: September 2023 – 2 days

Tombstone Territorial Park is located in western Yukon about 600km north of Whitehorse. It was named after the Tombstone range, which resembles a gravestone. Despite its name, the landscape is quite lively and diverse with boreal forests, jagged peaks, alpine meadows and arctic tundra. It’s reputed to be especially scenic at the end of summer with all the fall colours in the valley.

Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon and is the largest city in northern Canada. It’s located along the Yukon River and is surrounded by pristine wilderness. It has a rich history in mining and played a key role in the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1890s. Whitehorse is also reputed to be one of the best places in Canada to see the northern lights and enjoy the rugged outdoors.
