Kyoto once served as the capital of Japan and the emperor’s residence from 794 to 1868. While today it may no longer be the capital, it is considered the country’s cultural capital. It is well known for its numerous Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, imperial palaces, and gardens.

Nara
Visited – November 2018 – 2 days
Nara served as Japan’s first permanent capital. Even though the capital was eventually moved, the city remains full of historic treasures, temples and gardens. Oh, and deer.

Tokyo
Visited – November 2018 – 4 days
Dōmo arigatō, Mr. Roboto. This was pretty much the only Japanese we knew prior to booking our (very last minute) trip to Japan. But with our trusty cellphones in hand to help with translation and navigation, we were ready to immerse ourselves in a country rooted in ancient tradition. With its rich culture, exceptionally clean cities, efficient transportation, modern toilets, and endless sources of entertainment, Japan is unlike any other country we’ve visited before. First stop on our itinerary: Tokyo.
