The Cabin – October 2022

Length of stay: 2 days
Visited: October 2022

We’ve been battling a wicked cold over the past two weeks and were finally on the road to recovery. So we decided to head up to the cabin for the weekend to get a change of scenery and some fresh air. I’m a strong believer that spending time in nature can be healing and is good for your well-being.

Day 1: Cabins and Campfires

We left early Saturday morning and arrived at the cabin, or rather the road leading into the cabin, at around 10:30a.m. It was a little chilly outside, but the sun was shining. It felt nice to be outside. From the top of the road it’s about a kilometre hike to get to the cabin. We used to be able to drive in, but the road is in pretty rough shape these days (and so is our car).

Most of the leaves have already turned for the season and have fallen off the trees. It was fun to walk through the crunchy layer of leaves. A severe thunderstorm hit this area earlier in the summer and the damage was clearly visible on our hike to the cabin.

The thermometer indicated that it was 0°C inside the cabin when we arrived. So first things first, we got a fire going in the wood stove. After eating a late breakfast, we went for a walk to an old farm that’s located nearby. We had to hop over and crawl under a few fallen trees and branches to get there. The farm has been abandoned for years, but we could still see some remnants from its former days.

We continued along the road, which leads to another lake and came across what looked like an abandoned cottage. One of the windows was left open so we peeked inside. It looked like no one had been here in years. We tried to close the window, but it was stuck.

We made our way back to the cabin to take a break. We headed out later in the afternoon to go for a canoe ride as the sun was just starting to set. We paddled along the bay, which showed even more dramatic signs from the aftermath of the severe thunderstorm that swept through here earlier in the summer. There were a lot of trees knocked over and the roots had pulled up much of the shoreline. Miraculously there were no trees that had fallen on or around the cabin.

We continued our paddle around the bay. The water was as smooth as glass and we could clearly see the bottom of the lake. We hugged the shoreline and went on a scavenger hunt to pick up some trash. Here’s what we found: a kids kayak, six empty beer cans, an old lighter and a piece of styrofoam. We strategically used our paddles to collect the trash and hauled it back with us.

Once we returned to dry land, we got a fire going outside to enjoy the rest of the sunset. The nice thing about visiting late in the fall was that there were no bugs.

Once it got dark, we retreated back indoors to get the fire going again in the wood stove and to make dinner. We spent the remainder of the evening paying cards.

Day 2: Fog and the Sunrise

We woke up the next morning to a thick layer of fog on the lake. After making some tea and coffee, we went for a canoe ride around the bay to watch the sunrise. The mist slowly started to disappear with the rising sun.

When we returned to shore, we packed up some of our stuff and made a trip to the car. Along the way we ran into K’s dad and sister who came up to visit for the day. After eating a late breakfast, we went back outside to get to work. We cut up some firewood, using the chainsaw for the big logs and the handsaw for the smaller branches. We fully replenished our wood supply inside and even moved a few extra pieces into the outhouse. This will allow us to visit a few times during the winter if we wanted. We then walked along the road to clean up some of the fallen branches and debris.

After eating a late lunch, we finished packing the rest of our stuff and headed out. We were lucky to have had such incredible weather the past couple of days.

Too bad about the killer cold. There is a lot of stuff floating around out there these days. Looks like your first trip was a doozy though. Great weather for this late in fall and those foggy morning shots were so worth it. Happy Sunday Linda. Allan

I’m sure we were long overdue to catch a cold after not being sick for so long during the pandemic. It was pretty brutal though and took forever to get over the coughing. It was nice to finally get out of the house and spend time outdoors at the cabin. We couldn’t have asked for better weather so late in October. Hope you had a wonderful weekend. Linda

Your photos of the fog at sunrise are truly spectacular and it must have been an amazing experience to go for a canoe ride in such wonderful conditions. Well done for picking up trash – it saves the water ways from pollutants and it also makes you feel happy that you have GIVEN back. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Thanks for your lovely comment. Sunrises and sunsets are so much better to watch over the water. We were lucky that we had such fabulous weather so late in the fall and that we were able to still go canoeing. It was very disappointing to see so much trash along the shoreline. I’ve always wondered why someone litters, especially out in nature. Thanks for reading. Hope you had a wonderful weekend and are all ready for the holidays. Linda

So sorry to hear you hadn’t been feeling well! What a beautiful weekend in a beautiful spot. Kudos for the trash pick up too. So lovely to canoe on a lake like glass where you can see the bottom!!

Thanks! That cold was pretty hard to shake, but I like to think that our visit to the cabin helped with the recovery. It’s always nice to get some fresh air and have some time to catch up on sleep. I was surprised at how much trash we found along the shoreline, but the conditions were perfect for us to collect as much as we could since the water was so clear and calm.

Thanks for your kind words. We had a wonderful weekend at the cabin. I’m glad it was still warm enough to go canoeing. I was surprised at how much trash we found by the shoreline. The kids kayak was the best find. We towed it back to the cabin and are hoping that one of our nieces or nephews can find use of it.

It’s never a good time to be sick but it happens to us all. Glad to hear you are feeling better. Photos are stunning, especially the thick layer of fog on the lake and the fire by the lake in the evening. Great place to hide from the world! It’s good you could get out there.

    • WanderingCanadians says:

Thanks! It was bound to happen eventually. We haven’t been sick in a long time because of the pandemic and being able to work from home. I like to think that spending time at the cabin and being out in the fresh air helped speed up the recovery. The weather was fantastic and I’m glad we got to enjoy such a beautiful sunset and sunrise.

    • WanderingCanadians says:

For sure. We spent a lot of time at the cabin during the pandemic when everything was in lockdown. It’s very rustic and doesn’t have running water or electricity, but it’s completely surrounded by nature and is the perfect place to escape from the world around us.

    • WanderingCanadians says:

For sure. It was exactly what we needed after being cooped up indoors for a couple of weeks as we were battling the flu. It was nice to get a dose of nature and enjoy a beautiful sunset and sunrise.

Time in nature is indeed always healing and therapeutic. I’m glad you got the time away after such a rough two weeks of cold.

I enjoy reading about your trips to the cottage and the misty sunrise you got looked so nice.

I dare you two to go visit the abandoned cottage on a night hike. 😆 That would make a fun post!

I wonder what the story is with the seemingly abandoned lawnmower. maybe I’ve watched too many horror movies!

It felt so nice to finally get some fresh air and a change of scenery after being sick and stuck at home for a couple of weeks. That cold really kicked our buts. We couldn’t have asked for better weather so late in the fall for when we visited the cabin. I’m glad it was still warm enough for us to take the canoe out and go for a paddle around the lake. Watching the sunrise come in through the mist looked magical.

I was already kind of spooked by visiting that abandoned cabin in broad daylight! The door to the cabin was actually unlocked, but I was way too freaked to go inside to shut the open window. I can’t even begin to imagine visiting at night. That’s the thing nightmares are made of! Maybe the abandoned lawnmower has a connection with this property!?

Some beautiful moments from the latest cabin visit: morning fog on the lake, sunset, the canoe and a fire on the beach. Being in nature is definitely good for the soul and general wellbeing. Well done on picking up some of the trash that was floating around. #people. I’m sure that you are feeling much better after this change of scenery.

We also haven’t been to the cabin in a few months so this visit was long overdue. I’m glad it was still warm enough for us to go for a canoe ride around the lake. Thankfully the water was super calm and we were able to remove everything that we found.

Thank-you for clearing trash out of the lake, that’s so kind-hearted of you to take care of Nature. ❤️

You are too kind. Visiting the cabin was a great way to reconnect with nature and myself. It was nice to just focus on the small things in life, like appreciating a beautiful sunrise. I don’t do that enough. I was surprised at how much trash we found along the shoreline. I’m glad the water was very calm and we were able to retrieve everything we spotted.

I believe that nature is healing, too. You had incredibly beautiful weather and your photos are gorgeous. I would have loved that bonfire, too. I bet you sleep well there with the fresh air and exercise. Glad to hear that you’re feeling better now. Cheers.

I think this was the first and only campfire that we had all year. It was a real treat to sit by the fire and watch the setting sun. Spending the weekend at the cabin was just what we needed to get over our cold. I always sleep so well when we’re there.

I’m with you, nothing is better for mind, body, and soul like getting outdoors. So glad that you recovered and could go enjoy such a beautiful place. Your pictures of the canoe through the fog and the reflective trees in the water are stunning! 🙂

    • WanderingCanadians says:

Thanks! It was a bit spooky, but pretty neat to paddle across the lake in the fog to watch the sunrise. It looked magical. It’s crazy how quickly all the fog disappears once the sun is up though.

    • WanderingCanadians says:

Thanks! I like to think that spending the weekend at the cabin and in the fresh air was just what we needed to kick our cold to the curb. It was incredibly to watch the sunrise come up through all that mist and fog. It definitely looked magical.

Same. Spending time in nature is my happy place and helps put everything in my life into perspective. It’s funny how you don’t realize how much you miss (or need it) sometimes. We’re hoping to return to the cabin for New Years. Enjoy the rest of your holidays. Linda

The lake looked so magical the next morning with all that misty fog. It was well worth it to hop into the canoe and paddle through it to watch the sunrise. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment.

    • WanderingCanadians says:

For sure. There’s just something special about being surrounded by nature. I find it helps put everything into my life into perspective. Thanks for letting me know that some of my posts aren’t opening … oh the joys of WP. Wishing you a happy New Year as well. Cheers. Linda

The property has been in my husband’s family for over a century. The cabin has become our second home in some ways. We couldn’t have asked for better weather so late in October. The sunset and sunrise were both magical.

  11. BrittnyLee says:

The misty mornings look stunning. I would love to sit and sip on some hot coffee watching the fog over the water. That’s wild. 🙂 It’s nice that you got to enjoy some of the night by the fire with no bugs. That is one of the things I love best about fall 🙂 I know we’ve spoken about that before haha 😂😆 I’m glad you had a nice getaway. I used to stay in cabins with my family to camp while I was a kid. We used to stay in tents too 🙂 . It would always just depend on how we wanted to camp. The cabins were always cozy. Being a kid, I always wanted the high bunk haha 😆 The one year my gram and gramp rented a cabin that was alongside the creek. It was so calming listening to the creek flowing at night. I, of course was snuggled up a pine. Climbing the tree and looking at the creek was the coolest thing as a kid. I loved camping as a kid. I think I would love it just as much now, as long as Matt was there. 🙂 Thanks for sharing this trip. I’m glad you guys had a good time

I wholeheartedly agree with you Linda – nature has its own medicine! The sky is such a clear blue and makes for beautiful photos. A child’s kayak – that’s interesting and it still looks quite usable? Stunning photo of your fire with sunset. And what a lovely ride on your kayaks in the morning mist. As always, your cabin breakaways looks amazing!

    • WanderingCanadians says:

Thanks! Now that we’re able to travel more again, we haven’t spent too much time at the cabin so it was nice to return. We couldn’t have asked for better weather to enjoy the outdoors and see such a beautiful sunset by the fire and sunrise through the mist. The child’s kayak was definitely an unexpected find, but it was in pretty good shape. We ended up keeping it there as we think our nieces and nephews might get some use out of it next summer.

Thanks for your lovely comment. Even though the leaves had already fallen, I’m glad we still had some nice weather to gather firewood and go for a couple of canoe rides. It was exactly what we needed to recharge and get some rest and relaxation.
